Becoming Mom

Becoming a Mom was something I always aspired to do. I couldn't wait for the movement within my belly, the feeling of amazement watching an ultrasound image, and of course getting to bring my sweet baby home. When the pregnancy test turned positive, I shifted into my own kind of mommy mode. I wanted to read everything I could get my hands on. I wanted only the best for my baby and I was determined to figure out what that meant. I remember distinctly pouring over Parents magazine, asking people in online forums questions, and making plans for the nursery. The hours spent in preparation rivaled my own wedding planning a few years earlier.

Now, my oldest baby is twelve (how did that happen?). She's beautiful, smart, funny, and a wonderful human being. Looking back 12+ years ago, I realize the one thing I was missing during that phase of life was a place like Baby Moon. Sure I had the support of my friends and family, but not the support of others who were going through pregnancy at the same time as me. I didn't have a number I could call to ask personal questions and get appropriate referrals from, and I surely didn't have a singular place in my area where I could find education classes, fitness, car seat safety technicians, massage therapists, lactation consultants, and kids classes all rolled into one! Baby Moon seeks to encourage you along your path to becoming the parent you hope to be. We are the place you come before you are pregnant, during your pregnancy, and of course afterward. We are there to compassionately enjoy the wonderful times and to commiserate the tough ones. If you're pregnant in Lexington, KY, what are you waiting for? Baby Moon was created with you in mind and we look forward to seeing you soon!

It's back to school for you!

It's hard to describe the end to summer break. For some parents, it's a sigh of relief while others dread being away from their kids 7-9 hours a day. Both responses are valid and both are relevant. We all love our children, but we all also value a little time away from them. As we give them lunch money or pack a special lunch, drive them to school or put them on the bus, or hurry them out the door or relish in a long hug, let's also think about what we are going to do for ourselves during this transition.

Self care is often forgotten. It's a blip on the radar of many parents and parents to be. I think it should be a glaringly large and loud ding that goes off in our brains. If we can't care for ourselves, we can't care for others optimally. Let's look at a few things you can do as we move into a new school year to maintain sanity and to be able to stay up for those late night homework assignments that are coming.

Exercise

I know for many of us, myself included, it's a bad word. I hate to sweat, be sore and of course be out of breath. For those who love endurance building and sweating, join a local running group or do some hot yoga at Sterling Hot Yoga Works. If you're like me and would like to start something less endurance and sweat focused, try a yoga class at Barefoot Works and of course if your are pregnant or have had a baby in the last year, look into what we offer at Baby Moon! Prenatal yoga and mom and baby yoga are our specialties, but be on the lookout for some new offerings this fall that will absolutely please those with toddlers and couples desiring to practice together!

Go on a date

Yes, get out of the house and go on a date. It can be with your significant other or just by yourself. Choose a movie and go ahead and get the extra butter on that popcorn. The Movie Tavern  is a favorite spot of mine because I can dine and catch a movie at the same time. When time is of the essence, knocking out both at the same time is truly a great thing. The food has always been good and although the service can sometimes be a bit on the slow side, it's worth it to give this place space on your calendar.

Get a massage

Give us a call or schedule a massage online with the best massage therapists in Lexington, Ky. Tatsiana McGee and Caitlin Granier are licensed and highly skilled in many kinds on massage and absolutely love what they do.  Massage at Baby Moon is open to anyone and everyone and is the perfect way to start a day. If you're needing to schedule for a time that shows as unavailable, please contact us. Many times, we can add additional times  to the calendar to accommodate your specific needs.

Do nothing

This may sound crazy, but if you have a day off without the kids, do absolutely nothing. Sleep in or go back to bed once they are at school or mom's day out, eat your eggs and toast in your pajamas on the back patio, read a book for fun, take a relaxing bubble bath with an amazing bath bomb from , and rejuvinate yourself.

As a mom, I know that the rush and busyness of the day doesn't end when the kids go back to school. Sometimes it even intensifies with after school activities and homework. Just promise yourself that you'll save some time for you. I don;t mean time locked in your bathroom for 5 minutes while you attempt to pee alone. I mean real time to just take a deep breath, take in all of the beauty that is in your life and to be grateful for yourself. You are important-- don't ever forget that!
